Working Hard For Our Members!Welcome Back Everyone.
I thought I would give you an update. We are very busy these days getting ready for
all of those rides, cleaning up our maps, getting new signs and stickers, etc...
So our Map committee have been
working hard on cleaning up our existing maps and new maps. At the moment they are concentrating mostly on the maps
for our rides so that you can download them, to print or upload into your GPS in time for the rides. We discovered
that most tracks (this is pretty much the case on all Garmin GPS) once downloaded from a GPS, then saved, have too many waypoints.
When you try to upload the tracks into your GPS they end up being truncated on the GPS. So we researched this, and we
have found that your GPS can create thousands of waypoints on the tracking, but it can only accept a limited number of waypoints
on a track when being uploaded. So, we found if we filter our tracks down to 600 points or less, this eliminates the
problem. We use MapSource to filter out the "Extra" waypoints, and it does a really good job at filtering
them.
The Rides committe are getting ready to scout all the trails for the rides. As they scout the trails,
if there are any changes in the track because there's problem with the trails we will update our tracks on the site accordingly.
The Tracks on our site.... Where are they? The existing "Map Area" page will remain until the new
page is complete which I am working on. I'm in the process of posting them but have not published them yet.
There's a lot of work involved and we want to make sure that the info we provide is accurate and fully functional. Keep
checking here I will post it once they are available. But, somewhere on our website there is a link that will bring
you the page under construction.. see if you can find it... :0)
Note to those of you that is using Garmin's
MapSource software. We have discovered some major mistakes in their Topography Canada Maps VERSION 4. They are
nice 3D maps but some of the info is wrong so make sure before you head out with those maps in your GPS that the info is accurate.
For those of you that owns Version 4 and want to see an example, just look at the Sturgeon River, on V4 they list it
as the Temagami River. So please watch for this.
So, visit again to see what else were up to, we will start
posting here more often as the season is taking off. With this weather its too bad we didn't schedule any April Rides...
Later...
